How does it work?
- Open one of the two keyboards below. Any device works — a phone, a tablet, a laptop, a big monitor — and the keys resize to fill whatever screen it is on.
- Hold the device upright for the plain alphabet: A to Z in order, five or six keys to a row. Turn it sideways for the familiar QWERTY or QWERTZ layout.
- Press a key. The letter appears in the strip along the top and is spoken aloud at the same time.
- The backspace key removes the last letter and the spacebar separates words, so a whole sentence can be built up and shown to someone.
- Press F11 to lose the browser bars and gain a little more screen. Nothing else is needed.

The jumbo keyboard began as a toy for a toddler learning letters, and it turned out to be useful to people well past that age. Palm-sized keys, each letter spoken aloud the moment it is pressed, and a line of very large text across the top: that combination helps when small type is hard to read, when a hand is unsteady, or when the word is there but will not come out.
People use it after a stroke, where aphasia can make speaking or writing difficult and pointing at a letter is easier than forming a whole sentence. They use it with dementia and other cognitive conditions, where a familiar A to Z in order is easier to work through than the cramped keyboard on a phone. And they use it with low vision or limited fine motor control, where ordinary keys are simply too small to hit reliably.
None of that makes it a medical device or a certified communication aid, and it does not pretend to be one. It is a big, plain keyboard on whatever screen happens to be to hand — free, and there when someone needs to spell a word out to another person.
Why does turning the screen change the layout?
Because the two orientations suit two different jobs. Held upright there is room for five or six enormous keys to a row, and putting them in alphabetical order means anyone who knows the alphabet can find a letter by working forward from A — no memory of where the keys live is required. That is what a child learning letters needs, and it is what makes the keyboard usable for someone relearning to read or write.
Held sideways there is room for ten keys to a row, which is exactly a real keyboard's top row. At that point the familiar QWERTY or QWERTZ arrangement is the faster one for anybody who has typed before, because the muscle memory already exists. So the keyboard follows the orientation of the device rather than making anyone choose.
